Description

Lower molars are the posterior teeth found in the lower jaw (mandible). They are broad, strong teeth designed for grinding and chewing food, playing a vital role in the digestive process.

Adults typically have six lower molars – the first, second, and third molars (commonly known as wisdom teeth) on each side. The first molars usually erupt around age 6, followed by the second molars around age 12, and the third molars (wisdom teeth) between ages 17–25, though in some individuals they may not erupt at all.

Each molar features multiple cusps that increase the surface area for grinding food efficiently. Because of their location at the back of the mouth, lower molars are more prone to cavities, wear, and extraction in dental practice.
